Developing hardware for the transport sector demands more than simply designing a protective case. Devices are exposed to constant vibration, heavy daily use, environmental challenges and the risk of accidental damage or tampering. People. Every design decision has to balance durability, usability and manufacturability.

One recent project saw armourdog work alongside a transport technology provider to develop a bespoke rugged enclosure and mounting solution for a tablet-based ticket system. The result was a purpose-built solution designed specifically for demanding operational environments.
Designing for Real-World Conditions
Unlike consumer tablet cases, this enclosure needed to withstand continuous use inside public service vehicles. The design process focused on creating a product capable of delivering long-term reliability while remaining straightforward to install and maintain.
The final enclosure combined a rigid polycarbonate inner shell with a flexible silicone outer sleeve. This two-part construction provided structural strength while allowing technicians to fit and remove the tablet efficiently during servicing.
Throughout development, materials were selected not only for durability but also to satisfy relevant transport industry standards for use within passenger vehicles.
Engineering a Stronger Mounting System
Vehicle-mounted devices experience constant vibration and repeated handling, placing significant stress on mounting points.
During development, armourdog refined the rear mounting system through multiple design iterations. Structural ribs were introduced to reinforce the enclosure, mounting hardware was upgraded to distribute loads more effectively, and dimensional tolerances were carefully adjusted to ensure a precise fit with industry-standard mounting components.
These engineering refinements produced a mounting solution capable of withstanding the demands of daily operation while maintaining secure positioning throughout its service life.
Solving Cable Management Challenges
One of the most technically demanding aspects of the project was cable retention.
Rather than relying on a conventional charging connection, the enclosure was engineered to securely capture a custom USB-C cable within the silicone sleeve itself. The flexible material gently grips the connector, helping prevent accidental disconnection while creating a cleaner, more professional installation.
The cable routing was equally important. Multiple design revisions refined the cable path, introducing smoother exit geometry and dedicated routing features that minimise strain on the cable while protecting it from wear during years of operation.
From Prototype to Production

Like many successful hardware developments, the project progressed through several prototype stages before entering full production.
Early versions were rapidly manufactured using 3D printing, allowing the engineering team to validate fit, ergonomics and installation requirements before investing in production tooling.
Once the design had been proven, the project moved into tooling, first-off production samples, quality testing and manufacturing readiness. Every stage was carefully reviewed before approving the transition to full-scale production, ensuring the finished product met both performance and manufacturing requirements.
Engineering Beyond the Product
Successful product development extends well beyond CAD design.
Throughout the project, armourdog coordinated design reviews, manufacturing partners, tooling development, component suppliers and production quality checks to ensure every element worked together as a complete system.
This collaborative approach reduced manufacturing risk, accelerated development and delivered a robust solution ready for deployment in a demanding transport environment.
Turning Complex Requirements into Practical Products
Every industry presents its own engineering challenges. Whether it's protecting electronics in harsh environments, integrating bespoke cable management or developing custom mounting systems, successful products are built through careful design, rigorous testing and close collaboration throughout the development process.
At armourdog, that's exactly what we do - transforming complex requirements into robust, manufacturable products that perform reliably in the real world.
